Low Carb, yet it's Half n Half?!

Ok so I need to understand this. I had a lady come in the other day and she was all pissed off b/c we didn't have low-carb chai.
Ok..sorry, we can't please everyone. So she tells first off that she is pissed b/c we aren't meeting her dietary needs. (Ok and what about mine, and the person next to you, and the one that'll be after that.) I mean come on YOU are not a VIP.
Anyway, so she tells me that she is going to get a breve latte w/SF vanilla. Ok I guess that makes sense...you wanna do low-carb but you don't care how much fat is in the drink. That makes sense to me, how bout you????

FYI: A Breve is a drink made with half n half.

Does anyone else think that this low-carb diet fad is bad for your health?? I mean yes carbs can be the enemy, but I don't think that it is a "diet" when you are increasing your calorie intake. That seems a little counter-productive to me.
I know this is a strange subject to talk about, but seriously. I am just bothered by these women who bitch about how we don't cater to their diet needs. It's a coffee shop for goodness sake. These are the same women who last month would be getting skim in their latte, but now since they are on this low-carb diet they are getting half n half b/c it has less carbs. Don't just look at the carbs people, look at the calories!!!! If anyone out there can explain this low-carb thing to me, then please do.
Sorry that is my rant...I am sure that you all have noticed that I have these rants occasionally, but they are for valid things.

On another subject...Gabe and I are hoping to descend on the poor people of Muncie in April. That's right, you better watch out. I am coming with my drinking boots on, so Steph you have been warned (I have been drinking at a very high elevation for several years now, that means I am going to drink you under the table!) Now I won't spend all my time drinking, just most of it. It is going to be an event so you better believe that pics will be taken. I have gotten quite fond of taking random pics so watch out!!!
So now that I am rambling...it is time to go.
Peace to all my friends

(Warning: you set me off in rant mode myself. You can't talk about stupid people without setting me off.)

You see... this is why you need to work at an independent coffee shop: so you don't have to shrug with a fake smile and offer some canned corporate answer.

Point of fact: losing weight isn't rocket science. Calories in vs. calories out. Time and time again this basic formula has been demonstrated to be the only sure way to make the weight go away. Beyond that, tweaking one's intake of certain macromolecules (protein, carbs, lipids) may improve the rate of loss, but it is ultimately little more than basic accounting. (Granted, there are certain conditions and circumstances that can make this difficult, but for most of us... it's all about input/output.)

But here comes the hard part: having the willpower to stop eating and cut back on portion size. To be fair to the "low carb" dieters, this is the main reason for a low-carb diet. Sugars spike insulin levels and can cause us to remain hungry even after eating our fill. (This is why we want to mow down more fries after inhaling an entire basket.) By substituting a portion of carbohydrates with protein, it helps keep insulin at normal levels and thus reduces the urge to eat. If you ask me, the "low-carb lifestyle" is market driven BS. Instead, people should be adopting low-carb techniques into a "low-calorie lifestyle." Carbs aren't the enemy... our habits are.

Now, back to your fine customer. A breve as an alternative to a low-carb chai? Are you serious? That is completely asinine. Had I been in your shoes, I probably would have lost my job setting her straight. 16oz of half & half has more than 30 grams of saturated fat and 600 calories! Cripes... Good luck on your diet with those kind of numbers. To top it off, in spite of her ignorance of basic nutrition, she has the nerve to tell you that you're not catering to her needs. What a load of selfish crap.

Which brings me to your (and all service sector workers in general) frustration: bitching customers. I don't get it... do we not live in a capitalistic society? If they can't get chai the way they like it at your coffee shop, then get it somewhere else. That's the beauty of our economic system. If there is truly a market for something, then someone is offering it. The whining crybaby American consumer is one of the most repugnant species on the planet... hated both at home and abroad. The concept of "The customer is always right" has churned out millions of grown two-year-olds armed with credit cards and temper tantrums. *shudder*

I have elevated blood pressure... should I tell every establishment I frequent that they need to have a "low-sodium" alternative to everything on the menu? No. There is an enormous amount of conceit in thinking the company has to change so you don't have to.

If she's truly uptight about it, then she should buy her own mix and have you simply steam some milk (not cream!) and add it herself. There, problem solved... and it'll be a lot cheaper in the long run. Win-win situation.

(Okay... wow... obviously I still have some baggage leftover from my days in the espresso trenches. Maybe I should go chill out with a fully carb-loaded chai.)

Cheers!

Well to tell the truth the moment she went and sat down with her breve, Sarah and I were ripping her a new one for her lack of intelligence. Ahhh the fun of the coffee shop. You gotta always wonder what your barista thinks of you ;)
Thanx for the input.
